Interview with Kay James from K-Interiors
Kay James is an interior stylist and owner of K-Interiors, an interior design / styling house based in Bristol. Known for her love of colour, texture and pattern, Hayche got in touch with Kay and asked a few fun questions, to get to know a bit more about this lively and energetic design firm - daring her clients to be colour brave.
Hayche: What inspired you to be an interior designer?
Kay: I think growing up in the 70's, interiors I saw felt pretty drab and brown. I was always wanting to change everything around me. I even once convinced my Mum to buy a pink velvet sofa which of course didn’t go with anything else in the house.
Hayche: If they were to make a toy action figure of you, what would your accessory be?
Kay: This would have to be a colour wand that I could wave over any interior to show you how it would look in colour and pattern. Wouldn't that be great? It would be so much easier to convince people to be colour brave.
Hayche: To what degree have you actually controlled the course your life within the interior design world has taken?
Kay: Zero degrees. I’m a creative, there is no great plan it mostly just happens. But I do stay true to my desire to work with colour.
Hayche: What would be your dream interior project?
Kay: To take a really controversial or unexpected building like The Houses of Parliament or a Hospital and have free reign to add colour and pattern. Although this would also be incredibly challenging.
Hayche: What’s something you know you do differently than most people?
Kay: It’s difficult to explain, but I know I have my own way of working will colour pallets which creates my own style. I also think my previous career as a nurse helped me develop my communication skills to a higher level which is so important in this role.
I’m also a “watcher” I love to watch everything around me like people, places and events, it helps me read situations well.
Hayche: If you could go back in time and speak to your adolescent self, what advice would you give them about the interior design world?
Kay: Believe, Believe, Believe! I never believed I could be an Interior Designer. Why? I don’t know, it just wasn’t the done thing, but here I am!
