In Conversation with Emily Fotheringham

What inspired you to be an interior designer?

I was always incredibly creative as a child and excelled in anything artistic. Following in the footsteps of my father I started studying Architecture, however, this made me realise my true passion was designing the interiors of spaces and I completed my studies in Interior Design - it was the best decision I ever made.

If they were to make a toy action figure of you, what would your accessory be?

Magic Wand.

To what degree have you actually controlled the course your life within the design world has taken?

I decided early on I wanted to run my own design company, I had set up my own business within a year of leaving university. This has allowed me to shape my path within the design world. Every decision I have made has influenced my journey to date which I am very proud of. 

What would be your dream interior project?

I would like to design and build my own home. This would give to me total design freedom to shape my life in every way which is what I strive to do.

What’s something you know you do differently than most people?

As I run my own business, I make decisions on every level which greatly influences the overall project and offers a highly personal service to our clients. Our relationship with our clients is the most important aspect and with a small design team, we develop a much more personal relationship with them - the closer the relationship the more successful the project. 

If you could go back in time and speak to your adolescent self, what advice would you give them about the design world?

Don't be daunted by the Design World but to succeed you must be unique. Trust in your abilities and use your strengths. Believing in yourself is the most important thing. Life is too short, so you can't be afraid to chase your dreams and make your mark.
