In Conversation with Amanda Durham, Interior Design

AMANDA DURHAM

Amanda defines her style as timeless. She likes elegant residential interior design with a sense of fun and great attention to detail.

What inspired you to be an interior designer?

I used to be a food writer and stylist and have always loved beautiful things. When I re-trained as an interior designer I realised the process was very similar to cooking. It is all about getting the ingredients right, being super organised and having perfect timing. The joy of interiors is that they last so much longer than a plate of food.

If they were to make a toy action figure of you, what would your accessory be?

A tape measure and an iPad

To what degree have you actually controlled the course your life within the design world has taken?

I did think long and hard about changing careers but I am so pleased with the choices I have made. It has taken a lot of hard work and dedication. In the end my clients choose me and put their trust in my ideas which I am so grateful for. There is always a certain amount of luck required whatever you do in life.

What would be your dream interior project?

Whilst I really enjoy creating beautiful homes, I would love to design a restaurant or small hotel, I could combine my love of food and hospitality with my passion for interior design.

What’s something you know you do differently than most people?

Whilst my aim is to design spaces that look stunning I also give great consideration to how they function. If a house is not comfortable to live in and does not flow well it will never feel beautiful. Lighting is also incredibly important, it can completely change the mood of a room and add a real sense of theatre to a space.

If you could go back in time and speak to your adolescent self, what advice would you give them about the design world?

Be brave, bold and trust your gut instinct.
